Reading Focus:

• The students are continuing to demonstrate their level of understanding when they recall key details of a text. This week we are learning how to identify the main topic of a text.

Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.

Phonics Focus:

• Long i/long u/long o reading and spelling with silent "e" ending (hive, mute, and poke).
• We are learning when to add -s or -es to the ending of words.
• The students are learning how to drop the "e" when adding -ing or -ed (skating/skated).

Writing:

• The students are getting better each time we practice editing. We are working to identify when a sentence ends, adding the correct punctuation, making sure each sentence begins with a capital letter, and including capital letters for proper nouns and "I." 
• Our focus is on opinion writing. The students are learning how to write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name of the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure. In our first writing, we used the mentor text Hey, Little Ant by Philip M. Hoose. The students wrote about whether or not the boy should squish the ant, provided a reason for the opinion, and a sense of closure. I am very impressed with how our writing has improved since the beginning of the school year!

Math:

• We are busy reviewing math skills that have been introduced this school year. Here are a few:
• Identifying tens and ones in a two-digit number 
• Adding and Subtracting within 20 and fluently up to 10.
• Determining whether or not an equation is true or false (5 + 3 = 9 is False).
• Greater than/equal to/less than (5 < 9)
• Finding the missing number in an equation (9 = 5 +__).
• Solve word problems using addition/subtraction/finding missing addend.
