Phonics Focus:

• We are learning about the contractions "I'm, He's, and She's"
• We are learning how to change the y to i before adder "er" or "est" in comparing words (example: happy... happier... happiest).

Words Their Way:

• Students will continue to work on sorting and spelling the words from their sorts.

Writing:

• We will continue to work on explanatory writing with examples of how someone is a good citizen.

Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.

Book Reviews: Today we learned a bit about how we can share information about a book we read and encourage others to read it. We used our Kid's Journal app to write a brief summary about the book we read independently during SSR time. We also included a picture of the book and shared our favorite part of the story. 

MATH:

• Students were busy working on our "Function Machines" we started last Friday. We worked in pairs or alone to create our own machine that had "subtracting power!" Friends had to decide what the machine would subtract. They also needed to create examples to show how the numbers change when they go in the machine. If the function machine's power is -5, it would change 12 to 7 because 12-5 = 7. The kids loved being creative as they designed their machines and determined how the numbers would change. Today, the students wrote out subtraction problems to match the power of their function machines. We will take this information and create a Pic Collage to present our knowledge!
• We will continue to work with adding three numbers together (9 + 7 +5 = ___).
• We will reinforce the skill where you need to add to one side of the equation to make it true (12 + 5 = 9 + ___).

iPads:

• Last Friday, we introduced a new app called "Showbie." With this app, I create a file where students can upload their work that they complete on their iPads. It is AMAZING! Today, we uploaded two items from our Cheetah Checklist. The kids loved stepping away from the paper-pencil activities to practice spelling word wall words and to complete the book review from what they read during independent reading time (SSR). I am even able to type in comments on the students' work. You can check out what your child completed today on his/her iPad. Check it out!
