ELA:

Essential Question #5: How can using illustrations and details in a text help describe its key ideas?

Miss Nelson is Missing! Our class is working with the story to answer key questions. We are connecting this text to our theme "Characteristics of Good Citizens."We continue to use our retelling rope to help us recall key details and ideas in the story. The students will continue to work on comparing and contrasting characters in the story. We will use our knowledge based on pictures and evidence in the text to describe key details in the story.

• We are continuing to build our vocabulary with the understanding of antonyms.
• This week we are looking at adjectives that describe size and shape.

Reading Theory:

The students have a new link on their iPads called "Reading Theory." I will be sending home the usernames/passwords before the end of the week. The website is very similar to Front Row except that it goes along with reading and comprehension! Hooray! The students read the text (independently) and answer the comprehension questions (independently). After a few selections, it will find the "just right" level for your child. If your child works on this at home, that is great! If your child misses a comprehension question, you can help your child find the answer in the text. If your child gets stuck on a word when reading, prompt your child to try some of our decoding strategies (stretchy snake, flippy the dolphin, skip and come back, chunky monkey). MATH:

We continue to work on the following skills:

• Adding three numbers together
• Finding the missing number in addition and subtraction problems
• Place Value- understanding the difference between "digit" and "value" (example: What is the value in the ten's place for 57? The answer is 50. What is the digit in the ten's place? The answer is 5)

Your child can work on these skills on IXL. Once your child understands/masters the skill for 1st grade, he/she can practice on 2nd grade!

Social Studies:

This week is RED Week at Kipling. We are learning the importance of being kind and accepting to everyone (regardless of our differences)!
