Our reading focus this week addresses the following Common Core Standard:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.1.9
Identify basic similarities in and differences between two texts on the same topic (e.g., in illustrations, descriptions, or procedures).

We will also be reviewing:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.9
Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories.

Grammar Focus: 

• Identifying verbs for past and present.
• Reviewing when to add -s and -es to verbs

Phonics Focus: 

• Differentiating between the sounds of /nk/ and /ng/
• Identifying the /l/ sound spelled (le, el)
• Continued practice with /ur/ sound spelled (er, ir, ur)

Writing Focus:

In addition to reinforcing the convention skills of writing sentences that begin with capital letters, providing spaces between words, writing in lowercase letters when needed, and including proper punctuation at the end of the sentence, we are learning how to write opinion pieces. 

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.1
Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.

Math Focus:

We are learning how to identify if a number sentence is true or false.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.D.7
Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false. For example, which of the following equations are true and which are false? 6 = 6, 7 = 8 - 1, 5 + 2 = 2 + 5, 4 + 1 = 5 + 2.

We are reviewing many math standards from the previous month:

• Finding the missing number in an addition or subtraction problem (5 + __ = 9)
• Reading and writing numerals and representing a number of objects with a written numeral.
