Story Problems (Part I):

This week we have been working on solving story problems by using addition and subtraction strategies we have learned so far this school year (counting on/back, using a number line/hundreds chart, using manipulatives, and using fingers). Today, students took their learning to a new level by creating their own story problems. First, students came up with their own addition problem with a sum less than 20. Next, students worked to write down the "story" for the problem. Then, students made an illustration to match the math problem created. Then, students labeled their illustration by numbering sets or using the counting on strategy. Finally, students created a number sentence on the back to match and solved the number sentence. Whew!
